On Friday, September 17th , 2010 the Rector of the Ionian University Prof. Dimitrios Tsougarakis went to Bologna where, during an official ceremony, he signed the Magna Charta Universitatum on behalf of the Ionian University. This document declares the fundamental principles of university tradition. The declaration was signed in 1988 in Bologna, Italy, by all the European university rectors attending the 900-year anniversary celebration of the establishment of the University of Bologna, while since then more than 700 universities have signed the Magna Charta.
The purpose of the Magna Charta of Universities is to honor and highlight the deepest and most important values of universities and university traditions, and encourage and support the establishment of close links between European universities. Of course, since the values expressed in the declaration have global merit, it has been signed by universities all over the world.
