TABOO - TRANSGRESSION - TRANSCENDENCE in Art & Science 2020

Τhe fourth international conference "Taboo - Transgression - Transcendence in Art & Science" took place November 26–28, 2020, exclusively online as TTT2020 Vienna/Online, an umbilical cord between what would be and what it is. The event was an overall reconstruction of its original organization as a face to face experience at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Austria. TTT conference series including theoretical and art practice presentations, focusing: (a) on questions about the nature of the forbidden and aesthetics of liminality as expressed in art that uses or is inspired by technology and science; (b) on the opening of spaces for creative transformation in the merging of science and art.

TTT2020 Vienna/Online had one unique streaming channel with a 12 hours program/day followed by a recorded re-stream for audiences in other time zones. This means 24h a day for three days non-stop! These presentations are available in video-on-demand format until December 31, 2020. With 200 participants, the program of TTT2020 was divided in four categories in a total of twenty-three Sessions, six Roundtables, five ArtBox events and three Open Mic Q&A sessions opened to all attendees. Discussions covered ArtSci topics including: the use of bodily materials through art practice, the collaboration with artists in scientific labs, radical performance art, ecstatic body expressions and the future of art curating after the pandemic. The program was complemented by art events taking place during the pandemic.

The conference organizers prefered to remove from the program any clear identifications of affiliations or countries and instead of the usual numbering all sessions were identified with the 29 proteins encoded by the COVID-19 virus genome. This way, the objective was to make a reference to the particular hstorical time where all humanity is equaly fragile in face of the same disease, as well as exposed to different forms of tension and violence. This same intention was expressed in the warm welcome by the organizing committee including Dalila Honorato (Ionian University, Corfu), María Antonia González Valerio (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City), Zahra Mirza (University of Applied Arts Vienna), and Ingeborg Reichle (University of Applied Arts Vienna): “Thank you for being here. We have named ‘here’ Vienna / Online because we inhabit a place beyond borders and Vienna today and for the next couple of days is the space we envision to represent togetherness”. The conference had 780 subscribers and, during the conference, 750 unique visitors with 9600 page views and 820 comments. In total, the active users watching 24 hours a day for three days, were 400 unique visitors each day from 45 different countries, with top 10 countries by most visitors 1) USA, 2) Austria, 3) Germany, 4) Greece, 5) UK, 6) Australia, 7) Canada, 8) Spain, 9) Netherlands, and 10) Mexico.

A brainchild of Dalila Honorato, tenured faculty at the Ionian University, the TTT conference series is supported by its Steering Committee whose members also include Andreas Floros (GR), Rector of the Ionian University and influential personalities in contemporary art: Roy Ascott (UK), Gunalan Nadarajan (US), Melentie Pandilovski (AU), Stelarc (AU), Polona Tratnik (SI) and Adam Zaretsky (US). The digital venue for TTT2020 Vienna/Online is coordinated by the InArts Lab, directed by Andreas Giannakoulopoulos (Ionian University, Corfu).
