The main phase of the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) “Sustainable Destination Management and Marketing” was successfully completed in Corfu from 13 to 17 October 2025. The programme was organized by the Department of Tourism of the Ionian University within the framework of the Erasmus+ initiative, fostering a dynamic environment for learning, international collaboration, and exchange of experiences. The programme was coordinated by Professor Christina Beneki and Assistant Professor Naoum Mylonas.

A total of 57 students and academic staff from six universities participated in the programme:

  • Ionian University (Greece)– lead partner
  • Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences (Germany)
  • Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Finland)
  • University Jaume I (Spain)
  • Ukraine’s State University of Trade and Economics (Ukraine)
  • University of Salford (United Kingdom)

The online phase of the programme (1–2 October 2025) included introductory lectures on sustainable destination development, destination theory, the role of agritourism in rural revitalization, and the principles of regenerative tourism.

The on-site phase (13–17 October 2025) offered participants a rich academic and cultural experience. Students worked in mixed international teams to develop analyses and strategic proposals for the sustainable development of Corfu as a tourist destination. They also took part in a workshop on negotiating sustainable practices in tourism and hospitality, held at the Ionian University Central Library Hall, and enjoyed a cultural walking tour of Corfu’s Old Town, enhancing their intercultural understanding.

Furthermore, participants took part in educational visits to local enterprises: Grovenor Olive Mill (Agios Matthaios) – exploring olive oil tourism, Theotoky Estate (Ropa) – learning about wine tourism, and the Olivar Suites Hotel (Messonghi) – understanding sustainable practices and eco-certifications in hospitality. The warm hospitality of the hosting businesses and the insightful guided tours offered participants a unique opportunity to delve deeper into various forms of sustainable tourism.

The programme now enters its final phase, with the presentation of student projects on 30 October 2025, marking the successful completion of an international educational initiative that promotes cooperation, intercultural understanding, and sustainability in tourism.
