Κάθε τόπος έχει μια ξεχωριστή ακουστική ταυτότητα η οποία διαμορφώνεται από τους ήχους που παράγονται σ’ αυτόν εξαιτίας της μορφολογίας, των φυσικών φαινομένων και των δραστηριοτήτων των ζωντανών οργανισμών. Παράλληλα το σύνολο των ήχων αυτών επηρεάζει, άμεσα ή έμμεσα την συνείδηση και τον τρόπο έκφρασης των ανθρώπων που φιλοξενεί (κατοίκων ή επισκεπτών. Η μελέτη της δυναμικής αυτής σχέσης είναι το αντικείμενο της Ακουστικής Οικολογίας και η αφορμή για την σύσταση της Ελληνικής Εταιρείας Ακουστικής Οικολογίας (ΕΕΑΟ) που δραστηριοποιείται προς αυτήν τη κατεύθυνση και εκπροσωπεί το Παγκόσμιο Φόρουμ για την Ακουστική Οικολογία (World Forum for Acoustic Ecology – WFAE) στην χώρα μας.

The Gilden Lab is a research lab directed by David Gilden in the Psychology Department of the University of Texas at Austin. Their research addresses a variety of topics in the general fields of memory and attention. Current projects focus on the temporal constraints of human cognition and how they vary with body size, specifically, the limiting timescale for rhythm perception, music effects on semantic priming and time-to-contact, transition points in auditory streaming perception, and the integration of notes into melodies.

The Auditory Perception and Cognition Laboratory of the Department of Psychology, University of Minnesota studies many aspects of hearing, ranging from how the ear processes sound to how the brain interprets the signals it receives from the ear. Τhe Brain & Music Lab is part of the University of Southern California's Brain & Creativity Institute. The group is interested in the interdisciplinary study of music, psychology, and neuroscience. They employ techniques such as Electroencephalography (EEG), functional, structural, and diffusion-weighted neuroimaging (MRI), and psychometric measures to answer a wide variety of questions related to how music listening and playing interacts with and influences the brain throughout the lifespan.
